Annual
Schedule
Year-Round
Education: Why and How it Works
The academic schedule
of the year at The Holistic Elementary Education Center
is also unusual. The long summer vacations were historically
developed at a time when most children were needed to help
on the farm in the summer. The reason has gone for most
children but the effect persists. The problems of this tradition
are many:
-
Students
too frequently get out of the habit of studying and must
be reintroduced at the start of every school year.
-
Teachers
complain that too much gets forgotten over the long vacation.
-
When
both parents hold down jobs there is often a problem with
child care during the long vacations.
At The Holistic Elementary
Education Center we believe that learning should be life
long and year round. We have divided the fifty two weeks
of the year into four terms. Each term consists of:
-
nine
weeks of class learning,
-
one
week of out-of-class learning, and
-
three
weeks of vacation.
Therefore, the learning
year at The Holistic Elementary Education Center will consist
of one hundred eighty days of classroom learning (equal
to the mandated number of days in Oregon schools) plus twenty
out-of-class learning days.
Should a parent wish to have their child
out of school for an entire term in order to engage in something
for more than the three week vacation period, the overlapping
groups and unscheduled inter-group advancement at any time
during the year means that there would be no problem in the
child re-integrating into the school.
