Holistic Education
Elementary School
Out-of-Class
Learning
The
Holistic Education Elementary School holds that learning
to learn out of the classroom is a key to developing life-long
learning skills which are crucial in our quickly changing
world. To this end, we have deliberately included regular
periods for structured learning that do not occur in the
classroom. As these educational experiences entail learning
that can not occur in the classroom, these provide a way
for the school to extend the arena and therefore the forms
of learning.
The
four annual out-of-class periods may include:
-
a
variety of nature education activities
-
outdoor
adventure learning
-
concentrated
drama and art activities
-
cultural
programs
-
week-long
field trips
The value of 'experiencing' what is being learned about
has been obvious to educators for centuries, but as education
became increasingly an in-school activity (with the occasional
field trip) the opportunities for developing experiential
learning have been very limited. At The Holistic Education
Elementary School we will take every opportunity to have
experiential learning as well as conceptual learning, as
together these instill in young learners the skills and
habits of learning as a lifelong activity that is not confined
to particular locations or times.
